Introduction to the Accountability Post 2021 Week 02
Never let it be said that I’m be honest and direct. I didn’t write as much as I should have this week. There. I said it. I have a stack of excuses that is, I have to admit, pretty impressive. But I could have done better. I mean, last week I quoted Bull Durham. Talk about throwing down the gauntlet!
Here’re the numbers:
Clearly, mistakes were made….
Since the last report, I’ve only written 1,793 words, or about 1 morning’s worth. To my credit, it was a tough scene. It was one of the most abstract set designs I’ve tried, and finding the right balance between describing it in its full glory and keeping the action moving was a challenge.
If it doesn’t sound like I’m making excuses, then bless you. You’re nowhere near as cynical as I am!
Next Goals after This Accountability Post 2021 Week 02
How am I going to do better this week? Well, first I’ve setup a permanent writing station in my office. I had been sharing my gaming monitor, which I’m also using as my “work from home” workstation. Great monitor. But since I don’t want to fork out the cash for a reliable keyboard/mouse sharing device (and a good one is pretty pricey), I have to un-cable stuff to start writing.
Doesn’t sound like a big deal, does it? Ah, but like me, you didn’t take my stunning imagination into account. At least, my freaking imagination is stunning at manufacturing excuses not to write. It’s a minor hassle to connect the keyboard and monitor, shuffle the other keyboard out of the way, etc. But to hear my imagination tell the story, the effort was uphill, in the snow, both ways, with two — yes, two! — Sasquatches guarding the USB ports.
With my new setup, I sit down and open the laptop. Take that, imagination!
Second, I’m going to try to write during the week. This new setup might let me do that. I hope I can work that into my schedule. There’re reasons I generally can’t write during the week (family related stuff), but we’ll see.
Feedback Welcome!
Do you have any techniques that you use “against” yourself? I’d love to hear about your experience in the comments!
